Time to buy

How long you would need to work, at your current pay, to cover the price of a phone, a car or a small apartment.

Enter your monthly salary to see how long you need to work to afford a Tesla, iPhone, apartment, and more.

What the numbers assume

Each row divides a reference price by your annual pay and expresses the result as working time. The prices are single round dollar figures, shown converted at the current exchange rate — they are illustrative anchors, not a price survey, and the cost of an apartment in particular varies by more than an order of magnitude between cities.

The arithmetic assumes every unit of pay goes toward the purchase. There is no tax, no rent, no food, no saving rate. A result of eight months means eight months of gross pay equals the price, not that you could buy the thing in eight months.

That simplification is the point of the comparison. It strips out everything variable so the remaining ratio — price against earning power — can be read directly, and set against the same ratio for the counters elsewhere on the site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these real prices?

They are round reference figures chosen to be recognisable, not researched market prices. Treat them as anchors for the ratio rather than quotes.

Does it assume I save all my income?

Yes. The calculation is price divided by gross pay, with nothing set aside for living costs, tax or interest. Real saving time is always longer.

Why is my currency converted?

The reference prices are held in dollars and converted at the current rate so the comparison stays consistent. The underlying dollar figure does not change when you switch currency.
